Monica was a Christian in a mixed household in Roman North Africa. She raised her son Augustine through years of restlessness and error, following him across the Mediterranean and praying steadily until his conversion and baptism.
The late Roman Empire was religiously plural and intellectually restless. Monica lived at the intersection of family life and the great questions of the age.
Persevering prayer offered through the ordinary bonds of family love.
