A brilliant Franciscan preacher and teacher whose love of Scripture, concern for the poor and compassionate reputation made him one of the Church’s most beloved saints.
Born Fernando in Lisbon, Anthony first joined the Augustinian canons and later became a Franciscan after encountering missionaries who had died in Morocco. Illness redirected his hoped-for mission, and his gifts as a preacher and biblical teacher emerged in Italy and France. He died near Padua at thirty-five.
Anthony lived during the rapid growth of the mendicant orders and the renewal of preaching in medieval Europe.
