St Anthony of Padua was a Portuguese-born Franciscan priest, biblical scholar and powerful preacher whose unexpected journey from Augustinian study to Franciscan mission made him one of the Church’s earliest great Franciscan theologians, a defender of the poor and one of Christianity’s most beloved intercessors.
