Benedict withdrew from studies in Rome as a young man, drawn to a life of prayer and simplicity. After years as a hermit at Subiaco he gathered disciples and eventually founded the monastery of Monte Cassino, where he composed a Rule of life marked by moderation, work, hospitality and continual prayer.
